Metal machining video: Chip formation in indexable drilling

Understanding chip formation when using indexable drill inserts can increase drilling effectiveness when carrying our on-site project work, or repeatable operations in a manufacturing environment.

When using indexable drilling inserts your goal should be to achieve smooth chip evacuation through chip flute on the drill.  Exactly how this happens will vary depending upon the material being drilled and whether the chip has been created by the central or outer (peripheral) insert.

Unwanted chip formations

Long and less flexible chips produced by both the inner and outer inserts may wrap around the tool, hindering evacuation and causing damage to the tool or workpiece.

Undesirable chip formations may resemble crushed cones or be long inflexible chips with too many waves. Extra care will be needed with long chipping materials, such as low carbon steel and stainless steel. When drilling these materials, the cutting speed has significant impact on chip formation.

In many cases, you can solve undesirable chip formations by either increasing the cutting speed or reducing the feed rate.
