Petrochemical construction projects awarded in 2017

Mirage is pleased to bring you details of petrochemical construction projects awarded so far in 2017. These projects are good news for on-site machining companies, who carry out projects such as flange facing, pipe cutting and weld preparation. Olefins production complex

Construction of an olefins production complex in Nizhnekamsk, Republic of Tatarstan, Russia. The project includes an ethylene plant with a capacity of 600,000 tonnes per annum (tpa). The annual production capacity will be doubled in the future through the addition of a further plant. It also includes a 600,000 polyethylene plant and a 400,000 Polypropylene plant.

Olefins, polyolefin, chlor-alkali and plastics

The project will be built in Long Son of Ba Ria-Vung Tau, next to the site of Vietnam's third refinery. The complex will have an annual capacity of 1.4 million tonnes of olefins (ethylene, propylene, C4), 1.45 million tonnes of polyolefins (polyethylene, polypropylene) and 280,000 tonnes of Chlor-Alkali, 400,000 tonnes of VCM plastics and 330 tonnes of EDC plastics. The complex will include a line to produce 1.1 million metric tonnes per year ethylene, as well as a line to produce 550,000 metric tonnes per year of propylene. Ethane, naphtha, and propane will be used as feedstock.

Ethylene unit

US Gulf Coast Petrochemicals Project: New ethylene unit will include a 1.5 million metric tons/yr ethane cracker and ethylene derivatives facilities. The two new polyethylene facilities will use Chevron Phillips Chemical's proprietary loop slurry technologies, each one with a capacity of 500,000 metric tons/year of Marlex PE resin for delivery to customers in North America and for export to destinations around the world. The facilities will be located at the Sweeny facility, near the ethane cracker at Cedar Bayou. The project will include a rail yard. In total the USGC Petrochemicals Project is expected to create approximately 400 long-term direct jobs and 10,000 engineering and construction jobs.

Ethane cracker at existing refinery

The second phase of Kangan Petro Refining Complex in Iran’s southwestern Bushehr province, Assalouyeh, includes building Ethane Cracker and Polymer plants.The second phase is to produce 1 million tonnes per annum (tpa) of ethylene, 500,000 tpa of monoethylene glycol (MEG) as well as 350,000 tpa of high density polyethylene (HDPE) and linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE).

Ethylene plant

US Gulf Coast Petrochemicals Project: Construction of a 1.5 million tonnes per year grassroots ethylene plant. USGC Project also includes nearby Sweeny polyethylene facilities. The ethane cracker will utilize proprietary technology and will be built at Chevron Phillips' Cedar Bayou Chemical Complex. The plant will use ethane feedstock derived from shale gas resources in the United States. In total the USGC Petrochemicals Project is expected to create approximately 400 long-term direct jobs and 10,000 engineering and construction jobs.

Ethane cracker using shale gas

New 1 mtpa ethane cracker will take advantage of cheap feedstock from shale gas. The cracker would be tied to the existing BASF/Total JV steam cracker and the refinery, both in Port Arthur. The steam cracker will crack ethane to produce ethylene for use in existing facilities, and for sale to the market.

Methanol plant

Development of a 4,950 metric tons/day methanol plant on 1,300 acres (5.3 sq km) along the Mississippi River in St. James Parish, Louisiana. It will use natural gas feedstock. The plant will be built in three phases. The first phase will comprise a 1.8 mtpa methanol production unit, with 200 employees. 70% of the methanol will be shipped by ocean vessel to China for use in Shandong Yuhuang's other chemical operations. 30% will be sold to North American customers and shipped by river barge and rail.

Acetylene plant

Construction of a new acetylene production plant at the BASF Ludwigshafen site in Germany. It will have the capacity to produce 90,000 metric tonnes of acetylene per annum and will use an efficient production process.

Ammonia/urea plant

National Petrochemical Company (NPC) 14th Ammonia/Urea project to be located over 25.47 hectares, in Pars Special Economic/Energy Zone (Phase 2), Assaluyeh.The plant will have a total nominal production capacity of 1,800,000 t/y of  - 726,000 t/y of Ammonia (125,000 t/y saleable) - 1,155,000 t/y of Urea based (1,075 t/y saleable). The products of the plant will be used as chemical fertilizer for agricultural purposes.

Propylene plant

Construction of a petrochemical complex which will produce 450,000 tonnes of propylene per year. The plant will be located at Mahshahr Petrochemical Special Economic Zone (PETZONE). The feed stock will come from the Bandar Imam Petrochemical Complex (BIPC). This petrochemical plant will provide the feedstock for nearby petrochemical complexes including Rejal, Marun and Navid-Zar Chemie.

Heat resistant polymers

The petrochemical plant will produce 13,000 tonnes per year of super engineering plastic (high-heat-resistant polyamide-9T or PA9T) and 16,000 tonnes per year of hydrogenated styrenic block copolymer (HSBC) products.

Polyethylene plant

New polyethylene plant built at Formosa's Point Comfort Complex. It will have a capacity to produce 525,000 tonnes/year. The plant will use both 1-butene and 1-hexene, allowing the production of co-polymer PE. The plant will use a low-pressure, gas-phase polymerisation process. Both dry, sand-like and slurry-type catalysts can be used. The plant will also use an unnamed metal alkyl, which will serve as a co-catalyst for making certain grades of PE.
