Experiencing a fault with a hot tapping machine as you are about to perform the procedure is time-consuming and frustrating. In this article we'll help you identify common faults with hot tapping machines and provide solutions to resolve them quickly.

The machine will not rotate

There are several possible causes of this fault. Most of them are easily resolved and by following the following steps you should have the hot tapping machine back up and running quickly.

  1. Check all of the emergency stops at the site to ensure none of them have been activated. This simple check is the cause of many apparent faults.
  2. Check the hydraulic/air supply to the hot tapping machine to ensure this is working correctly. It is important to not only check the supply is working but is also working to the required levels necessary to drive the machine.
  3. The drive motor for the hot tapping machine may have a fault. Disconnect the drive motor and check the performance of the motor when disconnected from the machine.
  4. There may be damage to the drive gear train. Remove the motor and check the free rotation. Repair or replace as necessary.
  5. If the fault still cannot be found, check the supply to the motor to ensure all of the valves are working correctly.
  6. The machine may have stalled. In this situation you should reverse the drive motor and start again.

The machine does not traverse

Follow these steps to identify the cause of the fault and find a solution quickly.

  1. Check all of the emergency stops at the site to ensure none of them have been activated. This simple check is the cause of many apparent faults.
  2. Check the position of the feed selector on the hot tapping machine. Make sure the feed selector is on the correct setting and try again.
  3. Check the position of the direction selector to make sure it is not on neutral. Select the correct direction and try again.
  4. If the machine still will not traverse you may have a problem with the drive key. Remove and check the gearbox assembly and operation. Repair or replace as necessary.
  5. In some circumstances you may find the boring bar has run off the lead screw. Check the lead screw nut and screw are correctly engaged.

If you follow these steps and find the machine is still not working correctly, contact Mirage Machines. We provide portable machine tool services and can provide a qualified and experienced machine tool engineer to service machine tools of all types, not just our own.

Note: The guidance in this article is based on the Mirage Machines CHT3000 hot tapping machine and may not be applicable to all models in the Mirage range or to machines made by other manufacturers.
