They call them cities in the sea. Larger offshore oil rigs require upwards of a hundred people just to keep them running and with twelve hour shifts as standard, those aboard have little free time.
That's the case when working aboard the rigs but given that employees often work two weeks on, two weeks off, there is certainly time to explore some hobbies. One such hobby for many aboard the rigs is photography. With an whole ocean to observe it's no surprise there are many snappers at sea.
