Adapting a flange facer to reach a smaller diameter

The MM305i is an internal mounted machine which has the capacity to reface flange surface diameters from 12" down to 2". This is fine for a wide range of applications, but forreaching diameters less than 2", normally you would need and OD mount machine, such as the MM200e and the MM300e. If you don't have one of these, but you have an internally mounted one, there can be other ways to extend the machine's capabilities. Watch the video above to see a test cut of the adapted MM305i internally mounted  flange facing machine.

Recently, a customer came to us with a requirement to machine flanges with surfaces to 48mm. This wasn't possible using their standard machine, the MM305i.

A solution was developed by the Mirage Technical team, who designed a bespoke tool post assembly, allowing the cutting tool to reach closer to the flange bore without obstruction from other components. The standard expanding mandrel was also adapted to improve clearance to allow the tool the reach the edge of the bore.
