Single Drill Unit vs Double Drill Unit: What’s the difference?

Posted by Simon Pownall on Nov 12, 2015 8:30:00 AM

Mirage’s in-house design team have worked tirelessly to design, develop and manufacture the Single Drill Unit and Double Drill Unit for use subsea. The drills core use is to enable the recovery of oil rig conductors and casing strings without the need for extensive diver intervention – reducing safety risks.

Alongside the safety improvements are impressive time and cost savings – reducing time on site from days to hours, leading to a significant cost saving in man hours. Now successfully used on site exclusively by fellow Acteon company, Claxton Engineering, these machines are now available as part of Mirage’s standard product range.

Despite being classed as the same product range, the Single Drill Unit and Double Drill Unit offer a different solution for applications subsea…

The Single Drill Unit

The Mirage Single Drill Unit (SDU) was purely developed for subsea applications. The SDU provides drilling and pinning in one operation to capture/retain multiple strings before the complete severing of a caisson.

To do this, the retaining pin has an incorporated carbide insert for the drilling operations. Multiple strings plus cement are penetrated with the SDU also providing an auto release of the pin (operator controlled).

Upon completion of the drilling the pin is released from the SDU with the SDU machine assembly then being released from the Caisson and the strings are captured and retained for following operations.

The Double Drill Unit

The traditional Mirage Double Drill Unit (DDU) offers the completion of the pin drilling penetration into the caisson only with a capture/retaining pin to be then separately entered. Used in conjunction with a band saw too, the DDU provides a very efficient method of cutting and decommissioning pipeline, conductors and multiple grouted strings.

The DDU features as standard precision linear guides to ensure hole accuracy, helical gear driven spindles, quick clamp swing gate and flanged spindles available in 4”, 6” and 12” diameters. Award winning machinery

When first created in 2012, the SDU and DDU were both runner-up at the World Oil Awards om the ‘Health, Safety, and Environment / Sustainable Development Offshore Award’ category. A great accolade for the Mirage design team, whose innovative thinking and engineering acumen created yet another market-leading piece of machinery.

Speaking at the time about the award nomination, Managing Director Richard Silk said, "A piece of our kit being nominated for an award at such a prestigious event is a great feeling. We specialise in meeting challenges that others can’t, and our team being recognised for their designs is recognition that they deserve."
